• **Madison (Three Dollar Bridge to Ennis)** — the riffle that never ends. Big fish, easy wading, salmonfly hatch in late June/early July.
• **Yellowstone (Paradise Valley to Big Timber)** — the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48. Best after runoff drops in mid-July.
• **Missouri (Holter Dam to Cascade)** — tailwater that fishes like a giant spring creek. PMDs, tricos, and BWOs you can fish on a 6X tippet from a boat.
• **Bighorn (Afterbay to Bighorn Access)** — most consistent trophy water in the state. Fishes well 11 months a year.

• **August** — hoppers and terrestrials. Watch for hoot owl restrictions on the Yellowstone and lower Madison if water temps climb.
• **September–October** — Tricos, BWOs, brown trout pre-spawn streamer fishing. Often the best month of the year.
• **November–February** — tailwater midges. Missouri and Bighorn keep producing.

Hoot owl restrictions: read this before you go

When water temps hit 73°F in the afternoon for several days running, Montana FWP closes rivers from 2 p.m. to midnight ("hoot owl" hours). The Yellowstone and lower Madison get hit most often in late July and August. Always check FWP's current restrictions before you drive.
