How to Rig It

Fish alone for sighted fish or as the dry in a small dry-dropper setup. The orange post makes it easy to track in tricky light.

How to Present It

Drift it close to banks, undercuts, and overhanging brush where ants get blown into the water. Twitch it occasionally to imitate a struggling ant.

Why It Works

The two-segment foam body floats indefinitely, the rubber legs add lifelike movement, and the bright indicator lets you fish small ants without losing them on the water.

History

Lance Egan designed the Bionic Ant to solve the classic small-fly visibility problem — it fishes like a low-riding natural but stays trackable in real fishing light.

Pro Tip

Don't underestimate ants in trout water. On many western rivers in midsummer, ants outproduce hoppers when you fish tight to the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bionic Ant a real fly or just an attractor?+

It is a true ant imitation. The two foam segments give it the classic ant silhouette while the foam keeps it fishable all day.

Why is the indicator post so important?+

Small dark ants are nearly impossible to see on the water. The bright post lets you fish realistic small sizes without losing the fly.
