How to Rig It

Single dry or as a small dropper off a hopper.

Dead-drift along grassy or wooded banks. Beetles fall in randomly — no twitch needed.

Foam keeps the beetle floating low and natural. The dark silhouette against the sky is exactly what trout look up and see.

Modern foam terrestrials replaced fragile peacock-herl beetles in the 1990s and never looked back.

When trout refuse hoppers in midsummer, drop down to a #14 black foam beetle — they're keyed on a smaller silhouette.
