How to Rig It

Single dry, or the indicator dry in a hopper-dropper rig with a beadhead nymph.

How to Present It

Cast tight to grassy banks and let it drift. The rubber legs kick on every micro-current — and on the angler's twitch.

Why It Works

The yellow body and white wing scream 'big terrestrial' while the rubber legs add lifelike kick. It's a hopper, a stonefly, and a big caddis rolled into one searching pattern.

History

Designed by Doug Swisher in Montana in the 1980s, Madam X became the prototype for nearly every modern rubber-leg attractor dry fly.

Pro Tip

Twitch it. Unlike most dries, a small twitch makes the rubber legs kick and triggers reaction strikes from fish that ignored a dead drift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Madam X?+

Designer Doug Swisher named it after the famous portrait — a fly meant to be sexy and irresistible to trout.
