Mole Fly

The Mole Fly is a low-riding mayfly emerger that is especially effective during BWO, PMD, and small gray mayfly hatches. Its soft fur thorax and sparse silhouette make it one of the best technical trout flies for fish feeding in the film.

Imitates: Mayfly emergers trapped in or just under the film

How to Rig It

Fish it alone to rising fish or behind a small visible dry that acts as an indicator.

How to Present It

Dead-drift with zero drag through rise forms and feeding lanes.

Why It Works

The mole fur traps tiny bubbles and gives the thorax an incredibly natural emerging look.

History

The Mole Fly earned its reputation among anglers who needed a more realistic answer for trout refusing higher-riding dun patterns.

Pro Tip

If fish slash and refuse your dun, switch to the Mole Fly. They are often eating the emerger stage, not the fully hatched insect.
