How to Rig It
Single fly on a short, stout leader (4-6 ft). Sink-tip or full-sink line for deep holes.
How to Present It
Strip aggressively along banks and through deep holes. Pause-strip-strip-pause. Big browns hit on the pause when the fly sinks and breathes.
Why It Works
Articulated body wiggles like a wounded baitfish. Deer-hair head pushes water and triggers lateral-line strikes. Multiple sets of rubber legs add chaos that big browns can't ignore. This fly is built to catch trophies, not numbers.
History
Kelly Galloup developed the Sex Dungeon at the Slide Inn on the Madison River. It pioneered the modern articulated streamer movement and remains the gold-standard big-fish streamer worldwide.
Pro Tip
Pre-spawn brown trout (October-November) move on a Sex Dungeon more aggressively than any other time of year. Bring a 7-weight, 12-pound tippet, and prepare for the biggest brown of your life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Sex Dungeon imitate?+
Big baitfish — sculpins, dace, juvenile trout. Anything large enough that a 20-inch brown will spend energy chasing it.
What rod weight for a Sex Dungeon?+
7-weight minimum, 8-weight ideal. The fly is heavy and waterlogged; lighter rods can't cast it effectively.
When is the best time to fish a Sex Dungeon?+
October-November pre-spawn for big browns. Also high-water spring runoff and any time you're hunting a trophy fish.
