How to Rig It
Lead nymph on a jig hook with a tungsten bead. Drop a smaller midge or PT 18" below.
How to Present It
Dead-drift along the bottom in deep seams. The squirmy silicone material wiggles in the slightest current — that's the trigger.
Why It Works
Real worms get washed into rivers during rain and high water — trout know it and gorge on them. The silicone material moves like a live worm even in slow current. Pink and red show up in stained water and trigger strikes when nothing else does.
History
Evolved from the San Juan Worm in the mid-2010s when fly tiers discovered silicone 'squirmy' material from craft stores. It moves so much more naturally than chenille that it became the new standard.
Pro Tip
After a thunderstorm or during spring runoff, tie on a hot pink Squirmy and a #16 Hare's Ear. You'll out-fish everyone clinging to dries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Squirmy Worm cheating?+
Some purists say yes. Trout disagree. It's a legitimate imitation of a real food source — earthworms washed into the river during high water.
What color Squirmy Worm works best?+
Hot pink in stained water, natural pink/tan in clear. Red and wine work during spring runoff.
