How to Rig It
Big buoyant dry — perfect indicator for a heavy nymph dropper 18-30" below.
How to Present It
Slap it into pocket water, fast riffles, and seams along the bank. The high-floating elk hair lets it ride through whitewater that would drown other dries.
Why It Works
It's not a perfect imitation of anything — it's a perfect attractor of everything. The orange body, palmered hackle, and elk hair wing trigger strikes from fish that haven't seen a real stonefly in weeks.
History
Tied by Randall Kaufmann in the early 1980s for Western freestone rivers. Became the most popular searching dry fly in America.
Pro Tip
Use a #8 yellow Stimulator as the indicator on a hopper-dropper rig — it floats a heavy tungsten nymph all day and gets eaten on its own.
